It handles civil and criminal matters including but not limited to: Criminal - murder, capital murder, manslaughter, theft, aggravated robbery, intoxication, drug cases, assault, aggravated assault, sexual assault of adults and minors. Senate Bill 1329, authored by Sen. Joan Huffman, R-Houston, and sponsored by Rep. John Smithee, R-Amarillo, created the 464th Hidalgo County District Court, along with several other courts elsewhere in Texas, to help ensure the state has adequate judicial resources, according to the House Research Organization, which is the nonpartisan research arm of the Texas House of Representatives.
